Step into the peaceful grounds of Nezu Shrine, a 1,900-year-old Shinto shrine known for its striking red torii gates. As you walk through the tunnel-like path of torii, you’ll feel transported to a Kyoto-like hidden gem in the heart of Tokyo. Your guide will share the fascinating history of the shrine, its seasonal festivals, and why it remains a beloved spot for locals.
A short stroll takes us to the serene Yanaka Cemetery, famous for its cherry tree-lined pathways and historical significance. Here, we’ll visit the final resting place of the last Tokugawa shogun and other notable figures from Japan’s past. Unlike typical cemeteries, this space feels more like a peaceful park, offering a glimpse into Tokyo’s rich history and traditions.
Leaving the cemetery, we’ll meander through the quiet, nostalgic streets of Yanaka. This area has retained its traditional charm, with preserved wooden houses, hidden temples, and family-run shops that have been passed down for generations. We’ll stop to admire small temples along the way, where you’ll learn about Japan’s unique blend of Shinto and Buddhist traditions.
At the heart of Yanaka’s charm is Yanaka Ginza, a lively shopping street filled with small, local businesses. Here, we’ll take a short break to enjoy a snack and drink from a well-loved shop, giving you a taste of old Tokyo flavors. You’ll have a little time to browse the street, where you can find traditional crafts, handmade sweets, and quirky souvenirs.
As we continue our walk, we’ll pass by hidden art galleries and studios tucked away in Yanaka’s alleys. This area has become a quiet hub for artists who draw inspiration from the nostalgic atmosphere. Your guide will point out a few spots where you can peek inside or return to explore on your own. We’ll end the tour in a convenient location, leaving you with plenty of ideas for further exploration in Tokyo’s old town. Whether you choose to continue wandering on your own or relax at a local café, you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation of Tokyo’s history, traditions, and everyday charm.
