Scotland’s North Coast & Highlands - Road Trip Guidebook

3 days (approximately)

This self-guided Highlands road trip is designed to show how the landscapes of northern Scotland connect into one coherent journey rather than a single coastal loop.

Instead of simply following the North Coast 500, the guide explores the wider Highlands, linking sea lochs, glens, remote peninsulas and mountain passes into a natural travelling progression.

You can travel the full circular route or explore individual sections depending on your timeframe. Along the way the guide highlights iconic Highland locations alongside quieter roads, coastal villages and remote landscapes that many visitors miss.

Rather than a rigid itinerary, the guide provides narrative context, route progression and flexible time-based planning ideas so you can adapt the journey around weather, ferry connections and travel pace.

With 12 months access included, you can start planning well before your trip and return to the guide whenever you need.

What to expect

The Scotland’s North Coast & Highlands Road Trip Guidebook is a structured multi-day journey through one of Europe’s last truly wild landscapes, where deep glens, sea cliffs, white beaches and ancient mountains unfold in sequence.

Inspired by the regions made famous by the North Coast 500, the route explores the wider Highlands rather than simply following a signposted loop.

Covering the far north of Scotland, the journey works best over 7–14 days, with flexibility for shorter 3–10+ day trips. Distances are significant and roads are often slow and dramatic, making thoughtful pacing essential.

Inverness & the Great Glen – The gateway to the Highlands, including Loch Ness and forested glens.

Caithness & the Far Northeast – Big skies, fishing harbours and the northern edge of the mainland around John O’Groats.

The North Coast – Sutherland’s Atlantic edge, with wide beaches and limestone cliffs between Tongue and Durness.

Northwest Highlands – Mountain landscapes of Assynt, Torridon and Applecross, including the Bealach na Bà.

Each section includes narrative introductions, route structure and time-based planning ideas.
