Covering approximately 222 miles, the route works best over 4–7 days, with flexibility for shorter 3–10+ day trips. Rather than a single route, the journey unfolds in two contrasting chapters linking national park landscapes with the dramatic Northumberland coast.
Northumberland National Park & Hadrian’s Wall – Inland valleys, heather-covered hills and forest roads around Rothbury, the Simonside Hills and Kielder Water lead south to the sweeping hilltop sections of Hadrian’s Wall.
Castles & Coast – Wide beaches, dune systems and iconic coastal landmarks including Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and the tidal crossing to Holy Island.
Each section includes narrative introductions, route structure and time-based planning ideas.
