This experience takes place at a real Sámi reindeer camp on Salen Mountain above Hammerfest, led by a local reindeer-herding family. It is not a performance or staged attraction, but a calm cultural visit shaped by the natural rhythm of the animals and daily Sámi life.
Travelers meet reindeer up close, gather inside a traditional lavvu, and listen to personal stories about reindeer herding, culture, and life in the Arctic. Joik is shared as part of the storytelling, in a natural and respectful setting.
The focus is on authenticity, small moments, and cultural understanding — offering guests a genuine connection to Sámi culture, nature, and place.

Meeting and pickup
To locate us, search for “reindeer island Hammerfest” on Google Maps. The camp is located on Salen Mountain, approximately 8 minutes by car from Hammerfest city center. If walking, follow Sikksakkveien starting from Salsgata, behind the blue music pavilion. The walk takes around 10–15 minutes.

This stop takes place at an authentic Sámi reindeer camp located on Salen Mountain above Hammerfest. Travelers meet a local Sámi reindeer herder and are introduced to the reindeer that graze freely in the area during summer and early autumn. Guests spend time observing and feeding the reindeer while learning about reindeer herding, daily Sámi life, and the close relationship between people, animals, and nature. After time with the reindeer, travelers gather inside a traditional lavvu, where the guide shares personal stories about Sámi culture and performs joik. The experience is calm, respectful, and focused on cultural understanding rather than entertainment.
