Arrival at the traditional Sámi winter cabin, introduction to your host family, the surroundings, and practical information about cabin life and safety. Time to settle in, unpack, and get familiar with off-grid living. Depending on conditions, a short visit to the reindeer herd or nearby area.
After breakfast, prepare winter gear and plan the day together with your hosts. Travel by snowmobile sled into the tundra to locate and check on the reindeer herd. Depending on weather and herd movement, you may take part in daily tasks such as checking animals, giving extra feed when needed, and learning how Sámi herders move with the herd during winter. Learn how tracks, snow, wind, and weather guide daily decisions. Afternoon return to the cabin for rest, firewood gathering, and simple winter tasks.
After breakfast, prepare winter equipment and discuss the day with your hosts based on weather, daylight, and reindeer movement. Travel by snowmobile sled into the winter grazing areas to locate and move with the herd. The day is spent following the reindeer through the tundra, observing herd behavior, and taking part in daily herding tasks when appropriate. This may include checking animals, assisting with feeding if needed, and learning how Sámi herders guide and protect the herd during winter. Throughout the day, you learn how Sámi winter life adapts to changing conditions — reading tracks, snow quality, wind, and terrain. Breaks are taken outdoors or back at the cabin depending on conditions. In the evening, return to the cabin or lavvu for fire, food, and rest. Time is spent sharing meals, stories, and quiet moments in the Arctic winter.
Breakfast and final time in the winter landscape. Pack belongings and prepare for departure. Return journey by snowmobile sled and car back to Alta or agreed drop-off point. Goodbyes and end of experience.
