Szentendre is a historic town with cobblestone streets, Baroque architecture, and a lively art scene. Settled by various peoples over the centuries, it became an important center for Serbian refugees in the 17th century, who left behind a distinctive Orthodox heritage. Today, its museums, galleries, and Danube River promenade make it a favorite destination for visitors interested in culture and history.
Visegrád Castle in Hungary is a history buff's/nature lover's dream. Combining an impressive 13th-century citadel with stunning Danube views, this stop is a great opportunity to explore Hungary's royal past and take amazing photos of the Danube Bend. You can even see a wax figure exhibit of the famous 1335 meeting of three kings. (Please note that between December 1 - December 23, and January 13 - February 28, the castle is only open on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays. Between December 26 - January 12, the castle is open every day.)
Towering over Esztergom, Hungary, the Esztergom Basilica is a sight to behold. As the largest church in the country, it boasts a grand neoclassical design, a massive dome visible for kilometers, and a rich history. Built on the site of earlier churches dating back to King Stephen I, it's the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary and offers stunning views and a deep connection to Hungarian history. Esztergom Castle, next to the basilica, was the royal residence and the political and religious center of Hungary from the reign of Saint Stephen until the mid-13th century.
From Esztergom, we will briefly cross into Slovakia for postcard-perfect views of the basilica and the city’s old town.
Visegrad has a hidden gem: the Pilis Biosphere Reserve, a national park within the national park. It is a picturesque region characterized by its unique vegetation, meandering creeks, cascading waterfalls, and serene lakes teeming with trout. You can enjoy the unique experience of tasting freshly prepared trout, caught straight from these lakes, or game from the surrounding forests, at a cozy forest restaurant nestled among the trees (the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but there are many other lunch options available nearby).
For those interested, Szentendre’s Marzipan Museum showcases the artistry of this sweet craft, with life-size sculptures of Lady Diana, Michael Jackson, and many other figures from history, cartoons, and nature. Watch master confectioners at work as they shape sweets into edible art, making the visit both fun and educational - and of course tasty.
