Explore one of Budapest’s most fascinating hidden areas inside Gellért Hill. We begin at the unique Rock Chapel, carved directly into the mountain, where natural caves were transformed into a functioning church with a mysterious and atmospheric interior.
Just a short drive away, we visit the peaceful Garden of Philosophers, a lesser-known spot featuring statues of great thinkers from different cultures and religions, along with the Instagram-favorite Prince of Buda and Princess of Pest statue.
We continue to the Citadel area with the Liberty Statue, where you’ll enjoy some of the best panoramic views over Budapest, including the Danube, its bridges, and both the Buda and Pest sides of the city. While not entirely hidden, it’s a spot many visitors miss.
We visit Malom Lake, where warm thermal water flows out of the mountain from the largest known underwater thermal cave system in the world. Nearby, we explore the peaceful courtyard of Lukács Bath, known for its unique ‘wall of gratitude,’ filled with plaques left by visitors who credit the bath’s healing waters with their recovery.
We visit the peaceful tomb of Gül Baba, a 16th-century Ottoman dervish and poet, set on a hillside with beautiful views over the city. This serene hidden gem also features an interesting exhibition offering insight into Budapest’s Ottoman past.
We stop at the famous Columbo statue, a quirky tribute to the legendary TV detective, set in a charming part of the city. Along the way, we also pass by one of Budapest’s famous Kolodko mini statues—the tiny wind-up Trabant—one of the city’s most playful hidden artworks.
Discover the Roman Amphitheatre of Óbuda, where gladiators once fought nearly 2,000 years ago. Beneath the arena lies a massive underground water system, leading some researchers to believe it may even have been flooded for spectacular water-based events whereby slaves acted out naval battles, fighting for their lives on sea ships.
We continue to Óbuda’s charming Main Square, one of the most atmospheric corners of the city. Here, you’ll see the statue of Sindbad, the iconic Umbrella House, and the playful “Umbrella Statues” installation. There’s also an option to stop for a drink at Kőbuci, located in the historic Zichy Castle complex.
Next, we visit the charming dog statues at the University of Veterinary Medicine, showcasing iconic Hungarian breeds such as the Puli, Komondor, Vizsla, Kuvasz, Mudi, and Pumi. On the way, we pass by the Epreskert Art Colony, home to a hidden sculpture garden filled with historic and contemporary works.
Our final stop is the stunning Parisian Court (Párisi Udvar), arguably Budapest’s most beautiful interior, with its ornate passage and glass-covered arcade. You can also enjoy a drink in its beautiful café. On the way, we pass by the elegant villas along Hermina and Stefánia roads.
