The Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront is where the ferries leave from. (Please be aware that you will not be touring the Robben Island Museum with our tour guide.) After disembarking in Murray's Bay Harbour on the island's east coast, you and a group of others will board buses that will drive you to all of the historical sites on the island. You'll pass buildings and a tall wall constructed in the 1960s by prisoners as you head to the coaches. A Robben Island Tour Guide will lead the prison tour. They have an in-depth knowledge of the complex 500-year history of the island. The tour path passes by the leprosy graveyard, Robert Sobukwe's home, the Lime Quarry, the Bluestone Quarry, the army and naval bunkers, and the Maximum-Security Prison, which housed hundreds of South Africa's freedom fighters for many years. The tour's final event is seeing Nelson Mandela's cell.
Within 15 kilometers of the city center, travelers are free to input the location of their own pickup. Travelers will be picked up at their door and only need to provide their address and pickup place.
To understand South Africa's past, one must travel to Robben Island, and this tour provides an accessible and reasonably priced means of getting there. Included are hotel pickup and drop-off in Cape Town, Robben Island admission, and a guided tour. Discover the Island's history as a prison along the route, and hear experiences of Nelson Mandela, who served 18 of his 27-year term there.
