Hidden beneath the coastal village of shimoni, these natural color caves were once used as holding cells for enslaved Africans before they were shipped across the Indian ocean. During your guided tour, you'll walk through the dimly lit tunnels and see iron rings fixed into the caves walls, where captive were chained. Your local guide will share emotional stories and historical insights about the Arab and Swahili trade routes, the British abolition efforts and how the local community preserves the important heritage site today. Outside the caves, you will witness the small museum and memorial area, enjoy the quiet coastal surroundings.
