Bifana Cooking Class: The Most Iconic Portuguese Sandwich

3 hours (approximately)
Offered in: Portuguese and 1 more

If you’re curious about Portuguese food and want to go beyond restaurants, this is your chance to get hands-on and learn how to make one of the country’s most iconic dishes from scratch. Instead of just tasting a bifana, you’ll understand what makes it so special — and how to recreate it at home.

Along the way, you’ll cook other traditional dishes, enjoy good wine and beer, and experience the relaxed, social side of Portuguese culture — the kind that happens around the table, with simple food done really well.

It’s a fun, informal experience where you’ll cook, eat, laugh, and connect — and leave with new skills, great memories, and the confidence to bring a true taste of Portugal into your own kitchen.

What to expect

“Where can I eat the best bifana in Lagos?” We hear this all the time at The Kitchen… and our answer might surprise you: right here — when you make it yourself with our cooking instructor Corinne.

This experience is all about Portugal’s most iconic sandwich and the flavours around it — simple, rich, and made to be shared.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll learn how to marinate the pork for your bifana, so it can rest while we prepare the rest of the menu. Right after, we make a creamy rice pudding — you can taste a little, but save room for what’s coming next!

We then move into traditional petiscos: a rich Algarvian tomato stew and black pork chouriço grilled over the flame — smoky and full of flavour.

No bifana is complete without homemade fries — crispy outside, fluffy inside, just like locals do it.

During the class, you’ll enjoy water, wine, and beer (around two drinks per person).

Finally, everything comes together: your bifana, followed by dessert with a Portuguese liqueur over ice.

More than a cooking class, this is your answer to the bifana question — a relaxed journey into Portuguese food and culture.
