Leave Marrakech and follow a well-maintained road to the High Atlas Mountains. After about an hour, the road begins to wind along one of the most scenic routes in Morocco, passing terraced wheat fields, cacti, waving palm trees, and endless views. Soon, the imposing Kasbah Aït Benhaddou will appear like a mirage. This kasbah is composed of high-walled buildings made of clay mixed with straw. At the top, there is a fantastic view across the surrounding countryside and of the citadel itself, giving you the sense of entering a medieval world with its narrow lanes. After lunch, drive through the fertile valley to Dades Gorges. You'll encounter bright green palm valleys, rugged mountain peaks in all shapes and colors, small traditional villages, and breathtaking views. As the cliffs begin to narrow, you'll enter a gorge and reach your destination – a small, scenic mountain hotel where you'll be greeted by the friendly owner.
Soon, the imposing Kasbah Aït Benhaddou will loom up like a mirage. A kasbah is a type of citadel composed of high-walled buildings made of clay mixed with straw, historically used to shelter entire village communities. At the top of the Kasbah, there is a fantastic view across the surrounding countryside and of the citadel itself, giving you the sense of entering a medieval world with its narrow lanes. The fortified city of Ait Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. There are many things to do along the way, great for people who don't mind a little hike to see some exquisite views. Beautiful villages and towns are scattered all around.
After lunch, you'll set off again and drive through the fertile valley to Dades Gorges. If you thought the road from Marrakech was beautiful, wait until you see this. You'll encounter bizarre rock formations, bright green palm valleys, and rugged mountain peaks in all shapes and colors, interspersed with small traditional villages and breathtaking views. After two hours, you’ll pass a restaurant ('Panoramic') with an outdoor terrace overlooking the valley and colorful cliffs. It’s a nice place to stop for a cup of coffee or mint tea. From here, it’s another 40-minute drive past more weird but wonderful colorful rock formations. As the cliffs begin to narrow and you enter a gorge, you’ll know you’ve nearly reached your small mountain hotel. Moments later, you’ll be greeted by the friendly owner. Enjoy a night and dinner at the hotel (Kasbah La Gazelle) or a similar establishment.
