We will begin our journey with a pleasant drive towards Preveli Monastery, passing through the stunning Kourtaliotiko Gorge. During the drive, we’ll make a brief stop to admire the breathtaking views of the gorge, with its towering cliffs that rise dramatically on either side. It’s an ideal spot to take photos and enjoy the impressive natural landscape. Continuing on, we will reach Preveli Monastery, a historic site perched high on a cliff, offering panoramic views of the Libyan Sea. The monastery played a significant role in Crete’s resistance during the Ottoman era and World War II.
Next, we’ll explore the Preveli Palm Forest, a unique oasis where the Megalopotamos River meets the sea. This lush area is home to the rare Phoenix theofrasti, or Cretan date palm, which thrives in the fertile environment of the riverbanks. These palms are one of the few places where this species is found, making the forest a special ecological treasure. As you stroll among the towering palm trees, you’ll be surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the river and the rustling of the palms. The area is also rich in wildlife, with various bird species and small animals inhabiting the grove. Take a moment to dip your toes in the cool waters or enjoy the beautiful views, where the river meets the sea in a tranquil lagoon.
After our scenic drive, we will make a stop at Triopetra Beach, renowned for its striking rock formations and crystal-clear turquoise waters. This beautiful beach offers an excellent opportunity for photos, with the iconic Three Stones forming a dramatic backdrop against the rugged coastline of Crete. Take a moment to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and capture the stunning natural beauty of the area. Later on, we will proceed to a traditional taverna located near the Three Stones, where you will have the chance to indulge in an authentic Cretan lunch
Finally, we will make our way to the charming village of Spili. Our first stop will be at the famous lion-head fountains, where refreshing spring water flows from the mouths of stone lion sculptures, a signature feature of the village. After enjoying this iconic sight, we will walk through the narrow, picturesque paths, exploring the beauty of the village. We will also visit the folk museum, where you can learn about traditional Cretan life and customs. You can sample local delicacies, browse handmade crafts, or relax with a coffee at a cozy local café, soaking in the warm and inviting atmosphere.
