Gain a deeper understanding of both the Tonsina trail and general Seward history. While taking in views of the forest, mountains and ocean, gain a knowledge of the plants and wildlife you may pass along with a local’s insight on both the past and present of the area. Your guide is a 3rd-generation Sewardite!
Your trip will come with hiking poles, snacks, water, and a bear-prepared guide.
We will meet at the trailhead at Lowell Point State Recreation Site. Drive down Lowell Point Road (the dirt road that begins past the SeaLife Center) for approximately two miles. Turn right on Pinnacle View Road and then a right into the Lowell Point State Recreation Site.
Take a walk through the mossy forest to emerge out onto Tonsina Beach with a stunning view of Resurrection Bay and the many surrounding mountains. Not extremely strenuous, but note that much of the hike is uphill with some steeper downhill sections. Learn about some of the important historical figures of Resurrection Bay, the area’s role in World War II, and an understanding of the beautiful animals and plants that inhabit the trail system.
