Arrive at the majestic Kegon Waterfall, one of Japan's top three beautiful falls, and enjoy free time exploring the tranquil shores of nearby Lake Chuzenji.
Next, stop to admire the sacred, bright red Shinkyo Bridge gracefully crossing the Daiya River. In the afternoon, dive deep into Japan's rich samurai history at the spectacular Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its lavish gold-leaf architecture and intricate wood carvings.
After a fulfilling day surrounded by awe-inspiring nature and ancient cultural treasures, you will comfortably return to central Tokyo in the evening.
This legendary mountain road connects central Nikko to the Oku-Nikko region and is known for its 48 winding curves, each named after a character from the old Japanese "Iroha" syllabary. Divided into an uphill and downhill route, Irohazaka is especially famous for its dramatic switchbacks and stunning autumn foliage, drawing photographers and anime fans alike—particularly those familiar with Initial D. In October and November, the route is flanked by vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves, offering some of the most spectacular fall scenery in Japan.
One of Japan’s three most celebrated waterfalls, Kegon Waterfall plunges 97 meters from Lake Chuzenji into a rocky basin below. It’s a breathtaking natural attraction that offers visitors both free and paid viewing platforms, the latter providing closer access via an elevator. Surrounded by dense forest, the waterfall becomes even more majestic in autumn, when the surrounding cliffs are ablaze with colorful foliage. Its dramatic beauty has made it a recurring subject in Japanese literature and travel culture. Admission fee for waterfall elevator is not included.
Located at the foot of Mt. Nantai and formed by a volcanic eruption over 20,000 years ago, Lake Chuzenji sits at an altitude of 1,269 meters, making it Japan’s highest natural lake. The area is known for its refreshing alpine climate, peaceful lakeside atmosphere, and magnificent autumn leaves that attract thousands each fall. Strolling along the waterfront paths, visitors can enjoy serene views of the lake framed by golden and crimson trees, along with occasional glimpses of Western-style villas that reflect its historical role as a diplomatic summer retreat.
A sacred, vibrant red bridge marking the entrance to Nikko's shrines and temples. It stands beautifully against the surrounding forest and river gorge, offering a perfect photo opportunity. You can cross the bridge with an admission ticket, but admiring the crimson bridge from a short distance as it blends with the autumn foliage offers a magnificent view. It serves as an excellent photo spot, so don't forget to take a memorable picture!
A lavishly decorated UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Explore its incredibly intricate wood carvings, vibrant colors, and deep samurai history before heading back to Tokyo.
