You will be picked up from your hotel in Kovalam in the morning. The drive to Kanyakumari, situated 55 miles away, takes around two and a half hours. Upon reaching Kanyakumari first visit the 3000 year old Kumari Amman Temple situated on the seashore. The temple is dedicated to the virgin Goddess Kanyakumari, who is said to have slain a demon on this spot.
Next visit the Vivekananda Rock Memorial that stands on an island close to the shore. It is after meditating on this rock that the philosopher Swami Vivekananda decided to share his message with people of the world. Take lunch (own expense) at a local restaurant.
After lunch visit the Gandhi Memorial. Shaped like a temple, the memorial is situated by the sea at the spot where his ashes were kept for public view before they were immersed in the sea. The temple is an architectural marvel. On 2nd October, Gandhi’s birth anniversary, the rays of the sun fall exactly on the spot where the urn containing his ashes was kept.
Then take a ferry ride to the nearby island on which stands a 133 feet high statue of Thiruvalluvar, a famous Tamil poet and philosopher. The giant stone statue stands like the Colossus of Rhodes. It took 5 000 sculptors to complete this piece of work and it weighs over 14 million pounds. The height of the statue is symbolic of the 133 chapters of the poet’s famous work, Thirukkural. Take in the colors of the splendid sunset at the ocean’s edge before you end your trip to Kanyakumari. At the end of the tour, you will be driven back to Kovalam and dropped off at your hotel.
