The ramparts of the 15th century Fort Mehrangarh offer a great backdrop to indulge in a favorite pastime of the royals of Rajasthan - kite feeding. These predatory birds are a sight to behold as they gracefully swoop down from the sky and take the bait on offer. This is not a sport for the faint of heart! The flutter of the large wings and the sharp claws can be quite disconcerting for the uninitiated.
Highlights:
• The 14th century Fort Mehrangarh
• The imposing ramparts of the fort with its seven gates
• Kite feeding experience
• Rao Jodha Desert Park
Your hotel in the city of Jodhpur
Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was created in 2006 to try and restore the natural ecology of a large, rocky wasteland next to Mehrangarh Fort. It had suffered from years of neglect and was overrun by an invasive, thorny shrub, Prosopis juliflora, introduced from Central America almost a century ago. Today the park is home to native rock-loving plants and desert fauna. Explore the park accompanied by your guide.
Built in 1460, Fort Mehrangarh is one of the largest forts of India. Towering over the city of Mehrangarh, this massive fort has several palaces with beautiful carvings. Climb up the ramparts of the fort and arm yourself with some bait to attract kites. Your patience will be rewarded soon as the sharp eyed birds of prey sight the food and start to swoop down upon it. Once you have had your fill of this activity head back to Jodhpur City, stopping for some light refreshments (beverage excluded) en route.
