From Margaret Bridge we suggest to you to enter Margarete Island. Actually you could spend the whole day there, but your target will be to continue to Buda-Side of the city, Old-Buda and the Roman Beach. On Margaret Island private car traffic is prohibited, but take care on the public busses and pedestrians ! Some bars are located on the river bank, some cafes will be on your way and a wonderful scenery. Continue to Arpad Bridge in the north of the island, pass under the bridge and turn up to the bicycle way which leads you on the bridge to Buda.
You will be surprised to find one of the oldest parts of Budapest behind some socialist apartment blocks. Be prepared to ride a short distance on some cobble-stones, but you will be awarded with the impression of a historical small town and idyllic houses. You can enjoy a break, even visit some interesting museums, or you continue along the Danube Bicycle Trail "Eurovelo 6".
Passing an old gas plant which is now a software park and passing under a railway bridge (actually you can pass here to Pest-Side) you will reach the Roman Beach. Famous recreational area of Budapest, quite crowded on summer evenings and weekends. Plenty of restaurants and beach bars and depending on the water lever of the Danube beaches. Be aware that bathing is forbidden ! Take your time and enjoy ! After the Roman Beach you will find excellent signage to Szentendre and the Danube Bicycle trail. A new build bicycle way will lead through a forest at the Danube (be aware of the Moscitos !!) to Lupa-Lake, which is an artificial lake offering real beach feeling. The entrance however is from the other side (i.e. south-western), where there are large parking places.
If you are really focussed on reaching Szentendre then you will pass the lake on the bicycle way. But it is also great to spend the day at the Lupa lake - just than you shall postpone your trip to Szentendre to another day !!
Szentendre is a beautiful settlement at the Danube ca. 25 km north of Budapest. It offers a mediterranean atmosphere and houses artists. Originally Serb & Croat settlement, therefore with a huge Serb church. The best is to park the bicycles somewhere at the river and make a walk through the pedestrian area. Plenty of restaurants are waiting for you. There are beaches, where you can bath.
On weekends there is the option of a Boatride of approx. 1 hour from Szentendre downstream to Budapest (if you have booked "option: return by boat"). All days you can return by regional train "HEV" to Budapest (option: "return by train"). The train gives full flexibility as it runs several times per hour. Relax and enjoy the Danube and it's riverbanks. You can take the bicycle on the boat and return to our office from the Downtown-boat stop on Pestside, next to "Vigado". Take care: the boat first stops in Buda, Batthyany Square, before crossing to the final stop at Vigado. You can by some softdrinks on the boat, otherwise there is no service.
