The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is known for its beauty, high success rate, and gradual acclimatization profile.
The Lemosho Route begins on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro, crossing the lush rainforest, expansive heath and moorland, the dramatic Shira Plateau, and the alpine desert before joining the Machame Route near Lava Tower. It then ascends to Barafu Camp and makes the final summit push to Uhuru Peak via Stella Point.

Begin your trek at Lemosho Gate, ascending through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp. This first day helps with acclimatization and allows you to enjoy the vibrant forest environment. Elevation: 2,100m to 2,750m
Hike through heathland and moorland to Shira 1 Camp. Take in the panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the Shira Plateau while gradually adjusting to the altitude. Elevation: 2,750m to 3,500m
Trek across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp. Explore the plateau’s unique landscapes and continue acclimatizing to higher altitudes. Elevation: 3,500m to 3,900m
Ascend to the Lava Tower (4,600m) and then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy enhances acclimatization. Elevation: 3,900m to 3,900m (after descent)
Scale the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding climb, then proceed to Karanga Camp. Enjoy the stunning views and prepare for the final ascent. Elevation: 3,900m to 4,000m
Trek through alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit climb. Rest and prepare for the early morning ascent. Elevation: 4,000m to 4,600m
Begin the summit push in the early morning, reaching Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After summiting, descend to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain. Elevation: 4,600m to 5,895m (summit) and then to 3,100m
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your accomplishment and receive your certificate of completion. Elevation: 3,100m to 1,800m Depart from Tanzania or continue with your onward travel plans. Enjoy your Kilimanjaro adventure!
