Yaxha was a Mayan city of great importance for the Mayan World, it is surrounded by two lagoons and in the middle of dense vegetation. The La Pasión River is a 345 km river that runs through northern Guatemala, mainly in the department of Petén. The river originates in the mountains of northern Alta Verapaz, under the name of the Chajmaic River, then changes to the Sebol River and finally becomes the La Pasión River. It flows west until it joins the Salinas River to form the Usumacinta River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The La Pasión River basin is home to several important Mayan archaeological sites. The river and its surroundings are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including crocodiles, iguanas, howler monkeys and numerous species of birds and fish.
