    Goreme Open-Air Museum

It is a rock settlement located 2 kilometers east of Göreme Town. From the 4th century to the 13th century A.D, there was an intense monastic life in Göreme. There are churches, chapels, dining halls, and sitting areas in almost every rock block. The churches located in the Göreme Open-Air Museum are painted with 2 types of techniques. The first is the painting done directly on the rock surface and the second is the painting made on the rock with secco (tempera) and fresco techniques. The topics covered in the church are taken from the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. Today's Göreme Open Air Museum is the place where the religious education system was started. Soğanlı, Ihlara, and Açıksaray are places where the same education system was seen later. There are Girls and Boys Monastery, St. Basil's Church, Elmalı Church, St. Barbara Church, Yılanlı Church, Dark Church, Çarıklı Church, and Tokalı Church in Göreme Open Air Museum. Göreme Open Air Museum was opened to visitors in 1967.
