    Himeji Castle's history spans from its 14th century origins as a fort to the 17th century construction of the present day structure by Ikeda Terumasa. Known as the White Heron Castle, it survived centuries of change, including the end of feudalism and even World War II bombings. The castle, a major symbol of Japanese castle architecture, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993 and has undergone several major restoration projects to preserve its iconic white plaster walls and intricate wooden structures.

    KOKO-EN, Himeji Castle Nishi Oyashiki Ato Garden, is 3.5 hectares and 8.5 acres in size was opened 29 April 1992 to commemorate the 100th Year Anniversary of Himeji becoming a municipality. It is a new cultural site to serve not only for historical and cultural preservation, but also complimenting the UNESCO World Heritage HIMEJI CASTLE

    Mt. Shosha, at an elevation of 371 meters, is located to the northwest of Himeji City. The first ropeway was constructed in 1958. This ropeway used 2 cable cars, named Soyokaze and Sachikaze, that could hold 30 passengers each. In 1992, the ropeway was expanded, and currently operates with 2 cable cars, capable of carrying a maximum of 60 passengers each.
