Florence's *Accademia di Belle Arti* is one of the city's most important museums, world-renowned for housing Michelangelo’s sculpture *David*, one of the greatest masterpieces of the Renaissance. Founded in 1563 by Cosimo I de' Medici, the Accademia originally started as an art school designed to train artists in sculpture and painting. The museum, in addition to its collection of Michelangelo's sculptures, also displays an impressive collection of works by other great Renaissance masters, such as Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Paolo Uccello. The undisputed highlight of the Accademia is *David*, which impresses with its perfect anatomy and the intense expression of the biblical hero. The museum also showcases other unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo, such as the *Prisoners*, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s creative process.
