We will meet you at Gondar Airport or your hotel and embark on a scenic drive along a well-paved road to the park headquarters in Debark. This journey covers approximately 100 km and takes around two hours. Upon arrival at the headquarters, we will arrange the necessary permits for entry into the park and meet our scout. Following this, we will continue our drive for another hour before commencing our introductory hike. This first trek is an easy walk along the northern edge of the escarpment, offering stunning viewpoints over the foothills and plains of northern Ethiopia. During this hike, you may encounter Gelada baboons in their natural habitat.
Today, we will journey along the northern escarpment heading east before descending slightly into the Kaba Valley. Following this, we will ascend again until we reach Gich Abyss, continuing along a narrow ridge to a viewpoint that offers breathtaking vistas of the abyss and the Simien foothills. Here, you will also find a magnificent waterfall where the Jinbar River cascades 500 meters into the gorge. After approximately two hours of trekking, we will pause for lunch by the Jinbar River. Post-lunch, we will stroll through lush barley fields until we arrive at the charming village of Gich. Here, you can partake in a traditional coffee ceremony in one of the local huts and gain insight into rural farm life. From Gich village, it's a short walk to Gich camp, an excellent spot for observing lammergeyers and thick-billed ravens. After a leisurely afternoon, we will embark on a brief hike to Kedadit to witness the sunset over the stunning landscapes, returning to camp for dinner
From Gich camp, we will walk through vast fields of Giant Lobelia until we arrive at the impressive cliffs of Imet-Gogo (3926 m). Here, we will take some time to soak in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain valleys and the uniquely shaped domes visible in the distance, which we will explore more closely later in our journey. Next, we will descend into the Jinbahir River Valley, gaining a different perspective of Imet-Gogo and the volcanic landscape, where it appears as if large sections of mountains have been eroded away. The trail will take us along the edge of a steep escarpment that drops vertically for several hundred meters. We will ascend to a summit at 4070 m for lunch before continuing our descent to Chennek along a steep path for about two hours. Chennek camp offers stunning views in all directions. You can relax on a bench at the escarpment and look for Walia Ibex during the late afternoon or early morning, as they sometimes venture close to the campsite.
Day 4: Chennek to Buwahit On this day, we will ascend Buwahit, the second highest peak in the Simien Mountains at 4430 m. This rewarding climb offers the chance to spot the endemic Walia Ibex, a member of the goat family unique to this region. As we make our way to the summit, you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including Ethiopia's highest peak, Ras Dashen (4543 m). After enjoying the breathtaking scenery, we will descend back to Chennek camp, where our vehicle will be waiting to transport us back to Gondar. The drive will take approximately four hours.
