The activity is completely hands-on.

You prepare your meal in a traditional outdoor kitchen at the junction of a river and a canal location connects you with history. For hundreds of years, spices were transported on barges that along the river and canal where you cook.

The location connects you with nature. You cook in an outdoor kitchen next to the water. At sunset, hundreds of fruit bats fly overhead.

Enjoy the meal you have prepared in our waterfront dining pavilion.

Use authentic tools including an antique grinding stone, cooking utensils made from bamboo and coconut shells, and locally made terracotta pots.

Learn about the spices that made Sri Lanka so important in the spice trade and that make Sri Lankan cuisine so distinctive.

The cooking class is held at Waterland Hotel in Negombo. You can take an Uber or PickMe to/from Waterland. If you want help arranging pick-up from your hotel in Negombo, let us know. We will be happy to help.

What to expect

In this activity, you learn how to prepare pineapple curry and other dishes. All the dishes you prepare are vegetarian.

You learn authentic rustic cooking techniques and use an antique grinding stone, cooking utensils made from coconut shells, and locally made terra cotta pots.

Tour the garden and see how spices are grown and harvested.

Cook in an outdoor kitchen located on the Maha Oya River.

After the cooking class, place you feet in the sand and enjoy the meal in our pavilion by the river.

At sunset, watch hundreds of bats migrate across the river.
