The Falls Themselves The falls are renowned for their incredible volume of water, with about 220,000 liters per second barreling through a narrow rock gorge. The turquoise water and sheer power of the falls make for a mesmerizing spectacle. 2. Viewing Platforms Several viewing platforms allow you to get close to the action. The main viewing point offers a breathtaking view of the falls from above. For an alternative perspective, take the trails along the Waikato River to see the falls from different angles. 3. Huka Falls Walkway A 1-hour (one way) walking trail from Spa Thermal Park in Taupō to Huka Falls offers stunning views of the Waikato River and its surroundings. It’s an easy walk suitable for most fitness levels.
Arrival at Tongariro National Park: Early departure from the accommodation 5am/6am. – Start of the trek: The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4-kilometer (12-mile) trail that traverses a variety of volcanic terrain, including steaming vents, lava flows, and emerald lakes. The first part of the hike takes you through the Mangatepopo Valley, passing by Soda Springs and the dramatic cliffs of the valley walls. The Devil’s Staircase: This is a challenging section of the hike that involves a steep climb up loose scree. But the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. South Crater and Red Crater: Once you reach the top of the Devil’s Staircase, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the volcanic landscape. Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake: The trail then descends to the vivid Emerald Lakes, a series of crater lakes known for their stunning turquoise color. You’ll continue on to the Blue Lake, a deeper and more serene lake. Trek ends at Carpark, Return to Akl
