The visit to the Frantoio Rosso Ipogeo gives the feeling of traveling through time: first when Puglia was submerged by the sea until the last century, when olive oil was produced.
The route starts from the observation of marine fossils embedded in the limestone rock, and goes through the late medieval centuries when lampante oil was produced and exported to Europe.
It will include the production phases and equipment used at the time, and then conclude with the last period of the mill, when the production from lamps and lampante oil was transformed into edible oil.
Il Frantoio can be reached from the center of Martina Franca on foot, it is located near the church of St. Francis of Assisi. By car you can park for free coming from the state road to Alberobello.
Visitors can visit the oil mill in its different spaces and learn about the history of oil production from the Middle Ages to the modern age
