Pickup & Preparation Guests meet at our office in Rovaniemi (or get picked up from select hotels outside the city center). You’ll be provided with warm winter clothing: jacket, pants, boots, and gloves. Briefing from the guide about the night’s plan and safety.
Transit to First Viewing Zone Using real-time weather models and our local expertise, we drive toward the first location of interest. During the drive, your guide shares Aurora Borealis insights: why the lights form, how solar activity affects visibility, and pointers for recognizing small glimmers on the horizon. Since restrooms are scarce on these remote roads, this is usually our best chance for a quick stop at a roadside facility before dusk fully sets in.
Aurora attempt & Photo Setup Upon reaching a clear-sky location, we’ll pull over onto a safe shoulder or designated pull-out. The guide will unload a professional-quality camera and set up a tripod for anyone who wants photos of them. You are also provided a smaller tripod to try their own phone or DSLR shots. While you step out onto the snow (wearing the provided winter gear) to scan the northern sky, the guide adjusts camera settings for optimal long-exposure shots. Warm drinks and snacks stay in the minibus until you need them; you can return briefly to warm hands or grab another gingerbread cookie. If the aurora appears, we spend focused time capturing and admiring it. If not—no worries—we hop back into the minibus and chase clearer skies elsewhere.
On-the-Move Aurora Chasing This segment is dynamic. As cloud cover and aurora forecasts update, we continue driving to successive vantage points. When weather models predict a stronger chance of activity a bit further away, we’ll relocate—even if that means traveling into another country. During transitions, you can relax inside the van, enjoy hot drinks, munch on more gingerbread cookies or Fazer chocolates, and chat with your guide about advanced photography techniques (e.g., ISO settings, lens choices, framing).
Aurora Viewing & Return to Rovaniemi Once you’ve successfully photographed the northern lights, we’ll linger just long enough for a few more shots—often moving to a slightly darker spot if possible. After you’re satisfied, we pack up the camera and tripod. The guide will confirm a safe return route based on the best roads and lighting conditions. As we drive back to Rovaniemi, feel free to nap, review your photos on your camera/phone, or simply soak in the final bits of Finnish wilderness under the stars. We aim to arrive back in Rovaniemi by early morning (depending on how far we traveled)
