  • 1
    Munich Marienplatz

Marienplatz, the heart of Munich’s Old Town with its imposing architecture, the seat of the Lord Mayor, where you should definitely listen to one of the biggest European chimes at noon (12 o’clock). In the middle of the central square stands the historic Marian Column and towards the east you can see the well-known Fish Fountain and further behind it the representative Old Town Hall with the Toy Museum and the charming Juliet Capulet statue. In an easterly direction from the town hall, one can see one of Munich's most famous observation platforms, the church tower of Munich's oldest parish church Sankt Peter, which is also called the Altes Peter, at the edge between the buildings of Marienplatz. But beware: 300 steps are to be climbed on foot, but the view rewards for all the effort.

The Frauenkirche, also called Munich Cathedral or Cathedral 'Zu Unsere Frau', is considered the landmark of Munich's city centre and a visit, even outside of a church service, is worthwhile, especially because you have a great view of the entire city from the south tower.
