What to expect

In Kamikochi, travelers will experience the unique feeling of walking on deep snow using snowshoes, which provide flotation and make it easy to travel across areas where normal boots would sink. Snowshoeing is beginner-friendly (unlike skiing), and your guide will help fit the equipment and teach simple walking techniques. Along the way, the guide will introduce the winter flora and fauna of the Japan Alps and explain how nature survives in harsh alpine conditions, while looking for tracks and signs of wild animals such as monkeys, rabbits, foxes, and Japanese serow. You will also learn about the special landscape of Kamikochi—an accidental masterpiece shaped by volcanic activity—and enjoy the rare silence of this famous valley during the off-season, completely different from the crowded summer months.
