  The eight ponds of Oshino Hakkai are the beautiful byproduct of historic eruptions and intense volcanic activity. Several are fed by an underground reservoir and are renowned for their mineral-rich spring water.

  Lake Kawaguchiko

  These lakes were formed as a result of barrage formation by volcanic debris and solidified magma spewed out of Mt. Fuji and the off-spring volcanic outlets nearby. The lake is the oldest of the five and it is at least 50-60 thousand years old. There are scores of underwater springs at the lake bottom.

  Origin: Arakura Sengen Shrine traces its origins back to the 9th century when it was established as a place of worship dedicated to the Shinto goddess Konohanasakuya-hime.   Narusawa Ice Cave

  Narusawa Ice Cave: The lava tube brimming with 10-foot-high ice ... The Narusawa Ice Cave was formed over 1,150 years ago by a lava flow from the 864 eruption of Mount Fuji. Its history includes use as a natural refrigerator for storing ice, seeds, and silkworm cocoons during the Edo and Taisho periods, and it was designated a natural monument in 1929. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, with its year-round ice formations a key feature.

  Chureito Pagoda

  The Chureito Pagoda (忠霊塔, Chūreitō) is a five storied pagoda on the mountainside overlooking Fujiyoshida City and Mount Fuji off in the distance.   Owaku-dani Valley

  Optional: Guide to Hakone's Volcanic Owakudani Owakudani was formed about 3,000 years ago by an explosive eruption and collapse of the Hakone volcano's central cone, Mount Kamiya. It was originally named "Jigokudani" or "Hell Valley" due to its volcanic activity and sulfurous fumes. The name was changed to Owakudani, meaning "Great Boiling Valley," in 1873 when the Emperor Meiji visited.

During the Edo period, the west bank was cleared to create a checkpoint, and today it is a popular tourist destination known for its scenic views and historical sites.
