What to expect

A long-established Chochin lantern shop that has been in business for over 100 years.
This is an experience where you can paint an authentic festival Chochin lantern while interacting with fourth and fifth-generation craftsmen and take home an original Chochin lantern as a souvenir.
You can paint your favorite illustrations, letters, and other designs, and you can even write your name in kanji (the craftsman will teach you the kanji).
The Chochin lanterns are designed to be displayed upright and folded small, making them easy to take home with you.

The Chochin lanterns made during the experience are like the real ones used in the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, a traditional ritual held at Kushida Shrine near the store. The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival has a history of nearly 800 years. The highlight of the festival is the spectacular sight of about 1,000 people taking turns carrying a "Yama (portable shrine)," weighing about one ton, making for a heroic sight as they run through the streets of the town. These Chochin Lanterns are held by people who lead the way through the town to the "Yama." It is not only the symbol of the festival, but also a landmark symbol for the town.
