Glamis Castle, Gardens and Grounds Arrive at Glamis Castle for an elegant morning visit. With its fairytale turrets, long royal connections and rich family history, Glamis provides a memorable opening to the day. This was the cherished childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and it became a much-loved Scottish retreat for her daughters, Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Margaret. The young Princesses spent many childhood holidays here, with Princess Margaret also born at Glamis in 1930, adding an especially intimate royal chapter to the castle’s story. Enjoy time to explore the castle setting, gardens and estate grounds, with carefully paced opportunities for photographs and, where available, a guided visit through the castle interiors.
Scenic Highland drive via Glenshee Continue north-west towards Royal Deeside, travelling over Glenshee and through one of the most dramatic mountain routes in the region. The scenery shifts from lowland countryside to open Highland grandeur, with sweeping views, mountain passes and photo opportunities shaped by the weather and light of the day.
Pause for lunch in the Ballater or Braemar area, two of Royal Deeside’s most characterful Highland villages. Depending on the final route and opening times, your guide can allow time for a relaxed lunch, a short village wander, local shops or a scenic riverside pause before the afternoon visit to Balmoral.
Balmoral Castle and Royal Estate area Spend the afternoon in the heart of Royal Deeside at Balmoral and its surrounding estate landscape. Balmoral has been one of the British Royal Family’s most treasured Highland residences since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert acquired the estate in the 1850s, creating a deeply personal royal retreat that has passed through generations to the present day reign of King Charles III. Depending on seasonal access, the visit may include the grounds, gardens, exhibitions, gift shop, café, riverside walks or selected exterior viewpoints. If the main estate areas are closed, the experience can be adapted with Crathie, nearby viewpoints and elegant Royal Deeside photo stops.
