Explore the wild beauty of rural Japan on a guided hike through the Kirishima mountains.

Climb Mount Takachiho-no-mine, a striking volcanic peak shaped by fire and myth. At the summit stands the legendary Amanosakahoko, a sacred spear tied to Japanese mythology and known to anime fans as the inspiration behind the “Inverted Spear of Heaven” in Jujutsu Kaisen.

From the top, take in sweeping views across the volcanic range, including Mount Shinmoedake, and on clear days, Sakurajima (Japan’s most active volcano), rising across Kagoshima Bay.

With private transportation and a knowledgeable local guide, this experience offers a seamless and memorable way to explore one of Kyushu’s most unique landscapes.

What to expect

Your day begins with pickup from your hotel, station, or meeting point, followed by a scenic drive into the Kirishima mountains as the landscape gradually shifts into volcanic terrain and wide mountain views. You will arrive at Takachihogawara, the trailhead for Mount Takachiho-no-mine, where you can prepare before starting the hike. The trail climbs steadily through rugged terrain and open ridgelines, with changing views as you ascend, while your guide introduces scenic viewpoints and shares insights into the landscape and its cultural significance. At the summit, you will stand beside Amanosakahoko, a symbolic landmark connected to Japan’s mythological origins, with time to rest, take photos, and enjoy a Japanese-style onigiri lunch. After your break, you will descend at a comfortable pace, return to the trailhead, and head back by car, with drop-off at a convenient location for your onward travel.
