Once one of the first railway lines in the Dominican Republic, it played a central role in the economic development of the region. Built in the 19th century, it connected Puerto Plata with Santiago and allowed the transport of agricultural products, especially sugar, coffee and tobacco, to the port. The railway line contributed significantly to the growth of trade and made Puerto Plata an important commercial center. Today, unfortunately, only a historic locomotive is evidence of the former importance of the railway.
