This historic full-day tour to Robben Island, Long March to Freedom, and the V&A Waterfront is one of the most popular experiences in Cape Town. Your professional local guide will introduce you to the history of Cape Town and South Africa.
This private tour begins with a visit to Robben Island, where you will join a guided tour led by a former political prisoner. You will explore key heritage sites, including the leper graveyard, the Maximum Security Prison, the lime quarry where prisoners laboured, and Nelson Mandela’s cell.
You will then proceed to the Long March to Freedom, where you will learn about Africa’s history—from the first inhabitants, through colonial invasions, to the birth of democratic South Africa in 1994.
The day ends with an unforgettable African dinner and cultural experience.
Travelers must indicate their preferred pick-up point and will be collected directly from their hotel.
Pick-up at your accommodation in Cape Town will be 1 hour before boat departure. You will enjoy a private tour transfer to the Silo District, where you will be dropped off at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island. You will board a shared boat to Robben Island Museum, where a resident guide will lead the tour (our driver will not join). The tour lasts about 4 hours, including a bus ride and a visit to Nelson Mandela’s prison cell. After returning, your driver will meet you at the Gateway. You will then continue to the V&A Waterfront for lunch, followed by sunset at Signal Hill, before returning to your hotel.
Stop at one of South Africa’s top attractions, the V&A Waterfront, where you can enjoy lunch at your own expense at one of its award-winning restaurants or explore a wide range of shops, boutiques, and local craft markets. Located in the country’s oldest working harbour, this 123-hectare mixed-use area blends residential and commercial spaces, offering stunning views, vibrant entertainment, and a lively atmosphere that attracts over 23 million visitors each year.
This is a perfect stop after the Robben Island Museum tour, where you learn about the incarceration of South Africa’s political leaders. The Long Walk to Freedom offers insight not only into the apartheid era but also into earlier history, including the first inhabitants of South Africa, such as the Khoi-San people. This is an extraordinary experience, offering a meaningful glimpse into South Africa’s rich traditions and complex history.
