Nagoya "Black Montsuki Dye" Family Crest Silk Printing Experience

2 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

This special studio tour and workshop is led by the owner of Yamakatsu Senko, a long-established company continuing the tradition of NAGOYA KUROMONTSUKI ZOME DYEING. This is a nationally designated traditional craft that developed during the construction of Kiyosu and Nagoya Castles.

NAGOYA KUROMONTSUKI is a jet-black kimono worn as formal attire by samurai and townspeople during the Edo period. It is still used today for weddings and official ceremonies. Characterized by its deep black color and luster, it symbolizes the traditional beauty of Japan.

At the prestigious Yamakatsu Senko studio, after a lecture on history by a certified traditional craftsman, you can participate in a special workshop. You will dye a cloth item, such as a napkin, with a family crest (kamon) or the golden shachihoko (the symbol of Nagoya).
This is a precious opportunity to immerse yourself in Japan's unique culture of formal wear.
