This is an exclusive workshop tour of Owari Shippo (Cloisonné), led by a master craftsman. The history of this exquisite craft dates back to the Tenpo era (1830–1844), when the technique was developed through the study of cloisonné plates brought by Dutch ships.
As one of Japan’s most iconic traditional crafts, Owari Shippo is renowned for its intricate patterns, created by firing glass glaze onto a metal base. The vibrant colors and luster are determined by the glaze’s thickness, the firing process, and the metal used—all requiring the most delicate and advanced skills.
Originally developed in Nagoya, this technique is world-renowned for its elegance in decorative items and tableware. At the workshop, you will observe the meticulous production process up close and even try your hand at creating your own piece.
