Drakenstein Prison & The Nelson Mandela Statue Historical Significance Drakenstein Prison (formerly known as Victor Verster Prison) is a historic site in South Africa, famous for being the place where Nelson Mandela spent the final 14 months of his imprisonment before his release on 11 February 1990.
