Stop 1: Marrakech to Asni Village Departing Marrakech, we drive south across the Haouz Plain toward the majestic Toubkal Massif, known for its rugged peaks and deep valleys. Along the way, we pass through the charming village of Asni, where the route begins to wind through the foothills of the mountains. As we approach Imlil, breathtaking views of the Oued Rhirhaia Valley and scattered Berber settlements clinging to the hillsides unfold before us.
Stop 2: Imlil to Aremd and Sidi Chamarouch In Imlil, we leave the vehicle and embark on our hike with a professional mountain guide. The journey begins up the Mizane Valley, passing through Aremd, the largest settlement in the valley. Aremd offers a glimpse into traditional Berber life, with terraced farms and herds of goats and cattle navigating the narrow pathways. The fertile valley has been cultivated for generations, yielding crops such as maize, potatoes, and walnuts.
Stop 3: Sidi Chamarouch Continuions east, we reach the sacred shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, nestled near a picturesque waterfall. This site, visited by both tourists and Muslim pilgrims, is a cluster of unique dwellings blending seamlessly with the rocky landscape. Non-Muslims can admire the shrine from the stone bridge.
Stop 4: Toubkal Refuge From Sidi Chamarouch, we continue our steady ascent, following winding and zigzagging trails through the breathtaking landscape of the Mizane Valley. The hike takes us higher into the Atlas Mountains, crossing the snowline as we approach the Toubkal Refuge at an altitude of 3,206m. This refuge, nestled in the heart of the mountains, will be our overnight destination, offering a peaceful retreat after approximately 5 hours of walking.
Stop 1: Ascent to Jebel Toubkal We start early in the morning to begin our ascent to Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The trail takes us up the south cirque, crossing a creek above the refuge, and into scree fields that blanket the mountain. This section presents a challenging yet rewarding trek, as the loose pebbles and altitude add to the adventure. Despite the difficulty, the breathtaking views along the way make every step worthwhile.
Stop 2: Mount Toubkal Summit After reaching the ridge, the path levels out into a plateau, making the final stretch to the summit relatively easy. From the top, you'll be rewarded with stunning, unobstructed views in every direction—from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and the Anti-Atlas and desert in the south. These incredible panoramas justify why the Roman scholar Pliny once described the High Atlas as "the most wonderful mountains in all of Africa."
Stop 3: Descent and Return to Marrakech After savoring the views at the summit, we begin our descent back down the mountain, retracing our steps to Imlil. From there, we transfer by car back to Marrakech, concluding this incredible adventure.
