Experience the authentic beauty of western Romania on a captivating journey through the historic region of Banat. This two day tour blends traditional rural heritage, spectacular landscapes, and the legacy of ancient spa culture.
The tour begins with a scenic ride on the historic Oravița–Anina Railway, one of the oldest mountain railways in Romania, offering impressive views as the train crosses tunnels, viaducts, and forested hills.
The journey continues to Eftimie Murgu, where visitors can explore the traditional watermills along the scenic Rudăria Valley, a remarkable example of rural heritage.
Next is the historic spa town of Băile Herculane, famous since Roman times for its thermal waters and elegant architecture.
The highlight of our trips is the Danube Gorge where we will be having dinner, spending the night and exploring it the next day before heading back to Timisoara.
You'll be picked up by our guide from your hotel, airbnb or any other place in Timisoara or the surrounding area.
Our first stop will be in the small town of Oravita where we will hop on an old train that will take us through the oldest mountain railroad in Romania. We'll learn who built it and why and enjoy the breathtaking views.
Built mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were used by local villagers to grind grain using the power of flowing water. The complex is one of the largest preserved collections of watermills in southeastern Europe and is an important example of rural technology and heritage in Banat.
Next stop is one of the oldest spa resorts in Europe, located in the Cerna Valley. The town is famous for its natural thermal springs, which have been used since Roman times for healing and relaxation. According to legend, the springs were named after the hero Hercules, who supposedly bathed here to regain his strength.
Late afternoon we will arrive at the Danube Gorge, a spectacular canyon where the Danube River cuts through the Carpathian Mountains along the border of Romania and Serbia. The gorge features dramatic cliffs, narrow river passages, and rich biodiversity, being part of the protected area called Iron Gates Natural Park. Dinner on the banks of the river and rest.
After breakfast we will start exploring the gorge. First, we will admire the largest rock sculpture in Europe. The massive sculpture depicts Decebalus, the last king of the Dacians, carved into the riverside cliff. There we will hop on a motor boat to explore the gorge by water for a unique perspective.
We have the possibility to hike one of the most scenic hikes in the area. Rising to about 1000ft above the river, it offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints over the Danube River and the narrowest section of the gorge, with panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs and forests.
Before heading back to Timisoara, our last stop will be to see the interesting and unusual Buraul Mare Waterfall. It comes down a cliff and plunges about 20–30 meters down through a narrow funnel-shaped groove carved into the rock. The surrounding environment is covered with mossy rocks and dense forest, giving the site a cool, shaded atmosphere even during hot summer days.
