A bit over an hour’s drive from Stanley, Bertha’s Beach will welcome us with its white sands and crystal clear water. The area has been recognized as a wetland site of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Bertha herself was a ship that didn’t make it, and got wrecked by the shore, losing its precious cargo – planks of cedar wood, scattered on the beach to this day (you will notice there are almost no trees in the Falklands).
We will visit the colony of Gentoo penguins - noisy, but fascinating creatures. Lunch on the beach or in the car, your choice, might be a bit windy there.
Afterwards we will travel back to Yorke Bay and Gypsy Cove to see even more penguins on the dunes or in burrows(if we are lucky).
Lady Liz is a must see landmark in Falklands, you will have a chance to know why.
We then show you the highlights of Stanley, the capital city of the Falklands.
We will be wearing a Lazy Wind branded vests
Bertha’s Beach is a considered one of the best wildlife sites in the Falklands. It is recognised as a wetland site of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Bertha’s Beach qualifies as an Important Bird Area (IBA), a global standard set by BirdLife International. It is home to 500 breeding pairs of Gentoo penguins, plus a wide variety of other water birds. If you are lucky, you may see Peal’s and Commerson’s dolphins frolicking in the water. Altogether, it is a special place in the Falklands, and that is why we are proud to offer you this tour.
During this part of the tour we will watch gentoo penguins frolicking on the beach at Yorke Bay. The colony is large, and there is usually a lot going on in penguin community life! We will watch them play, interact with each other, and swim in the sea. If we are lucky, we might even see some visiting king penguins. The route through the dunes on its own provides beautiful sights, you would be forgiven for thinking you are on the moon! You will need to walk about 5 minutes in the sand dunes to visit the penguins at Yorke Bay, so sensible walking shoes are strongly encouraged! Our younger guests tend to enjoy sliding down the sand dunes - please let them wear clothes enabling that!
Gypsy Cove – an idyllic cove with a Caribbean feel to it. On sunny days, the colour of the sea takes your breath away. It is part of a National Nature Preserve, and also home to a colony of Magellanic penguins, on top of plenty of other wildlife. The colony is a short walk up a sloping hill, with gravelled pathways and view terraces on the way.
The Lady Elizabeth is a must see in the Falklands. Uncommonly pretty, she commands the attention, majestic despite having been shipwrecked. If you are lucky enough to see her at low tide, you might even walk over to her, to have a close encounter with Lady Liz.
The southernmost capital city in the world, our little Stanley is a surprisingly lively place. It boasts a cathedral with a famous Whalebone Arch (made of whale jaws), a museum, the governor's residence, and a Liberation Memorial. There are several souvenir shops and cafes ready to welcome you. We will show you the highlights of our city from the car, and will be happy to direct and advise you should you wish to explore further on your own accord.
