What to expect

At OKADA in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, we share Japanese traditional culture through hands-on experiences in shodo (calligraphy), sado (tea ceremony), and Yuzen dyeing.

In our Yuzen dyeing workshop, you can experience Kata-Yuzen, one of the traditional kimono-making techniques.
Kata-Yuzen is a method of creating designs by layering multiple stencil sheets. Each stencil is carefully carved by specialized craftsmen by hand, and dozens of stencils are required to complete a single kimono—sometimes even up to one hundred.

In this experience, you will follow real Kata-Yuzen steps: attaching the fabric to a Yuzen board, placing stencils over the material, and applying colors with a brush to create your own original hand-dyed tenugui to take home.

We hope you will enjoy discovering Japan’s traditional craftsmanship as a memorable part of your stay in Kyoto.
We look forward to welcoming you in our refined and peaceful space.
