Venice is flat, crowded and at sea level. Two hours north the road climbs into the Dolomites and none of that is true any more. In a small air-conditioned minivan — sixteen people, not a coach — you stop at Lake Santa Croce with the peaks upside down in the water, walk through Pieve di Cadore where Titian was born, and reach Lake Misurina under the three towers of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, where you can circle the lake or ride the chairlift up to 2,106 metres. The day ends in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the "Pearl of the Dolomites" and host of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The driver speaks English and Italian and knows where to stop for the photograph.
Meet the driver 15 minutes before departure on the left-hand side of Piazzale Roma, in the car park in front of Hotel Olimpia (Rio Tera Sant'Andrea 460). Look for a sign with the tour name or an orange umbrella. Take the Actv water bus to Piazzale Roma and walk towards the taxi rank.
First stop: the Dolomite peaks reflected in the clear water of Lake Santa Croce.
A short walk through the mountain town where Titian was born — time for a coffee before heading deeper into the Dolomites.
Time to walk round Lake Misurina under the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, with the Sorapis and Marmolada behind. Optional lunch stop, or take the chairlift up to Col del Varda at 2,106 m (ticket not included).
About 30 minutes free in the "Pearl of the Dolomites" — the town that hosts the 2026 Winter Olympics — to walk the main street and look up at the peaks.
