Ever tried Japanese Calligraphy? Here is the chance to discover one of the most popular Japanese cultures, Shodo. Our cultural tour will be held at a local Gibier bar-restaurant in Kamakura.
We offer calligraphy experience, including a short lecture on Japanese letters and basic skills with a brush. After some practice, you will make an artwork on a traditional card to bring back. The tour also comes with one drink offered by the restaurant. If you are interested in the traditional activity with a glass of local drink, this is the tour for you! As we only accept a private group, you can have a relaxed time with your friend or family. Your instructor, who is fluent in English and familiar with beginners, will help you make a unique memory and souvenior from Japan!
Note1: The tour is operated in the second floor. A person is required to climb stairs by oneself. (No elevator equipped)
Note2: When booking, please confirm your name and gender for the sake of letter list preparation.
What's Included
Meeting and pickup
When exiting from Kamakura Station West Exit, turn left and head for the Hase area. Go straight on the Onari street for about 2 minutes and you will find the restaurant Minamoto on the right. The restaurant is on the second floor. The building is next to the crepe cafe restaurant.
What to expect
The tour contains a short explanation on Japanese calligraphy including how to use the tools for the workshop. After deciding the letters for your art, you will have practice time for about 30 minutes (the time could defy). If you want to write something specific, we will help you to find the best letters. (We appreciate if you inform us your requests beforehand as it takes time to consider the options and we would not want to waste your time during the workshop.) You can alwayschoose the letters from our carefully selected words as well. When you are ready, you will write the letter(s) on a special paper. Then, you will make a hand-made stamp to finish up the art. It will be a wonderful souvenir from Japan!
The tour includes one drink and a rice-cereal bar (restaurant original). The restaurant is known for its local based menu. We hope you explore a taste of Japanese local foods along with the traditional activity in Kamakura, one of the historical cities in Japan.
