Following a circuitous route from Fez to Marrakech is worthwhile for taking you through Morocco’s Atlas Mountains and desert—but can be tricky to arrange independently. Make it easy with this shared-group 3-day tour, which includes transport and accommodation. Traverse mountains, stay overnight in Erg Chebbi’s dunes, take camel treks, admire the Todra Gorge, and experience mud-built kasbahs, lush oases, and the high Tizi n’Tichka pass before arriving in Marrakech.
We can meet travelers at Bab Boujloud (Blue Gate) as the meeting point, or we can arrange pickup directly from their accommodation in the city
We can meet travelers at the Blue Gate (Bab Boujloud), which is the most convenient meeting point.
We’ll begin our adventure by crossing the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains, with our first stop at Ifrane, often referred to as the Switzerland of Morocco, for its Alpine-style architecture and cool weather. After a short drive, we’ll pause at the cedar forests of Michlifen, home to wild macaque monkeys, where you can snap a few pictures and enjoy the serene nature. From there, we’ll continue on a long but beautiful drive, passing through the breathtaking Ziz Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, which is lined with lush date palm oases. Finally, as the day progresses, we’ll arrive at the iconic Golden Dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga, where your adventure in the desert begins.
Rise early to enjoy the magical desert sunrise before starting the day! We’ll first explore the stunning Todra Gorges, which have towering canyon walls offering perfect photo opportunities. From there, we’ll walk through the verdant oasis of Tinghir, accompanied by a local guide, where you’ll discover the lush agriculture and visit the Jewish quarter to learn about the fascinating Berber carpet-making traditions. Afterward, we’ll continue through the Rose Valley, where we’ll stop at a local cooperative to learn about the unique Damask roses that thrive in this region, their cultivation, and their uses in creating beauty products. We’ll reach our accommodation in either Rose Valley or Ouarzazate by evening.
After breakfast, we’ll head to the world-famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. Here, you’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of this ancient fortified village, renowned for its distinctive earthen clay architecture and its role in many famous films. Once we’ve explored its history, we’ll journey through the majestic High Atlas Mountains, marveling at their breathtaking views and passing the impressive Tizi n’Tichka Pass. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Marrakech, where you’ll be dropped off directly at your hotel (if accessible) or the nearest possible location.
