This name comes from mystic storiesof the monks who used to live here in their rock-cut hermit cells. Goreme Open Air Museum is a monastic complex from medieval era. It is the most visited sight in Cappadocia region. As one of the biggest but certainly the best preserved Greek Orthodox monastery the cave churches here were painted with scenes of old and New Testament dating from the 10th to the 12th centuries. Outstanding conditions of these Byzantine frescoes are a must-see attraction. Apart from these cave churches here we visit communal areas of the monastic complex such as refectories, kitchens, storages etc. Goreme Open Air Museum is considered as one of the best places to see on earth for the Byzantine era frescoes.
