Recognized as one of the top 100 beach and sunset attractions in Japan, the "Couples Stone" of Futamigaura is a popular and romantic site in Fukuoka. Framed by a pristine white Torii gate amidst an azure sea, the twin islets are said to represent the lovers and deities Izanagi and Izanami bound together in matrimony by the shimenawa rope that entwines them.

Nestled in a giant redwood forest not far from the "Couples Rock" in Futamigaura, Sakurai Shrine is known today as a "power spot" where you can re-energise and refresh yourself amidst the ancient buildings and verdant nature of the area. According to legend, in 1610 a lightning bolt struck the mountain opening up a cave and revealing the tumulus of a deity who emerged and enfused the area with its tremendous energy. Many miraculous acts were attributed to the stone god eventually leading to construction of the shrine in 1632 to enclose the tumulus beneath the present day structures. Today the main buildings are recognized as National cultural Important Properties for their historical significance.
