The WANDER & WALK Capitol Steps & Stories Guided Walking Tour takes you on a mesmerizing stroll through more than 400 years of Virginia history.
The tour includes the history of the changing landscape in Virginia; from our indigenous ancestors, the Algonquin people who already knew this area as Tsenecomoco thousands of years before the English would arrive at Jamestown, to Voices from the Garden, a first of its kind commemoration to women who helped build Virginia, to civil rights monument featuring Barbara Johns, we’ll follow the steps and stories of this grand square, with meandering walkways shaded by native trees in a design realised in 1850. Grounded by the ideals of freedom envisioned by Virginian Thomas Jefferson, our nation’s third president, gaze up at his white columned creation, and continue to wander; pondering the echoes of the past and how they may guide us into the future in this ever-changing landscape.
We will meet you at the entrance to the coffee shop. Arrive early and feel free to purchase a coffee to bring on the walk.
