5 hours 30 minutes (approximately)
Offered in: English

Heinabergslón is a hidden gem which feels far off the beaten path. If you like to experience raw nature without the tourists crowds then this place is for you! The neighbouring mountains are totally inaccessible by road, guaranteeing solitude.

We use packrafts, lightweight inflatable boats which give us ultimate flexibility in crafting our adventures.

We emphasise "slow travel"; adventurous trips which explore seldom visited places and give our guests the time to take in the unique environments that we are lucky enough to visit.

We take a maximum of 6 travellers to keep our tours personal.

What to expect

Kayak around icebergs at a beautiful, secluded glacier lake and hike a seldom visited mountain, in the shadow of Europe’s largest glacier.

This tour combines kayaking and hiking in an off-the-beaten-path adventure. We use packrafts (lightweight inflatable kayaks) which gives us ultimate flexibility in designing amazing expeditions on land and water, without the constraints of heavy, plastic kayaks. Paddle around ancient icebergs and hike across untouched land in this carefully crafted showcase of the best Vatnajökull National Park has to offer.

The tour begins at Hotel Smyrlabjörg, approximately halfway between Jökulsárlón and Höfn. From here, a 20 minute 4x4 journey takes us towards the glacier and the start of our adventure!

We'll begin with an introduction to the equipment, kayaking techniques and safety considerations before launching the boats and exploring the iceberg-filled lake for 1.5 - 2 hours. We'll then land the boats and hike through a remote landscape to a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the glacier. After hiking, we'll once more don our drysuits and continue paddling a short way, before hiking back to the car.
