Coral Restoration Snorkeling Tour in Amed, Bali with NGO

4 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

Explore the vibrant underwater world of Amed, Bali, where the calm waters and coral reefs await. Since 2016, we have run this nursery and outplanted over 10,000 corals around Lipah Bay from this nursery.

Have a fun and educational day learning about corals, their importance and why they are disappearing with all the threats they are facing today. Led by a Indonesian marine biologist, you will learn about what a coral is and how restoration works.

We will gear up and swim out from shore to the coral nusery. You will get to see how the corals have grown since we planted them and how they are now teeming with fish calling them home. We will harvest some corals fragments and you can mount them onto planting plugs to be replanted back onto reefs.

Give back to the coral reefs and the local community, while spending a fun mornings swimming with colorful tropical fish and corals. All profits go back towards Ocean Gardener for our coral restoration program.

What to expect

You will start first with a presentation to give you a background on the coral reefs and their importance to help you understand the corals better when you see them in person during the snorkel part of the tour.

You will learn about coral biology, the shapes they can form, Hard vs Soft Corals and the threats coral reefs face today. We will then cover coral reproduction and how coral farming and restoration works.

We will then gear up and snorkel the nursery. We will collect your snorkel and fins and head out to the coral nursery. Your guide will point out specific corals. All equipment is included, so you just show up ready to learn and explore! No boat needed - we will gear up on shore and swim to the reef during low tide. Perfect for beginners!

You will work with your local Indonesian marine biologist to fragment a coral cutting from a donor colony and attach it to a plug so the coral has something to anchor to continuing growing. Your plug will replaced back into the nursery. We will continue monitoring your colony and subsequently, when the colony is large enough, we will outplant them to restore the surrounding reefs.

A minimum of 2 people is needed for the tour.
